Butabika Hospital is a public psychiatric hospital, and is thus funded by the Government of Uganda and administered by the Ministry of Health. Founded in 1955, the hospital has recently undergone major rehabilitation and remodeling. General care in the hospital is free, however, there is a private wing where service is paid for and non-tax revenue collected to cater for the medical supplies and requirements to sustain its operations. As the second largest hospital in Uganda, the hospital has an official bed capacity of 550 though it handles between 1100 and 1300 in-patients at any one time. The hospital also has out-patient services, with an outpatient department handling about 350 patients daily with a focus on primary health care for the people from the surrounding communities.
